Gemma Ex Lapide
Gem of rock
The Latin phrase ‘Gemma ex Lapide’ can be translated as ‘jewel gained from a stone’ or ‘gemstone extracted from a rock’. The project explores the core relationship between stones and jewellery, while it also bridges between body and space. Departing from research and an experimental way of working, Studio DŌ produced a series of contemporary objects that express authenticity.
Exquisite Core Products
Gemma ex Lapide exists out of a series of small sculptures for the domestic environment, while they’re also a jewel for the body. As a whole, every piece becomes an object, reflecting on the origin of (gem)stones in jewelry. Instead of storing the jewel in a drawer, we offer to present it as an object of desire.
Gemma ex Lapide series
Minimals
The ‘Minimal’ series takes a more sober and convenient direction. By integrating more basic elements these pieces become more approachable as a wearable jewel.
Blunts
With the exquisite ‘Blunt’ series the character of each stone comes to life in a more expressive and bold way, resulting in eccentric and flaunting stones to wear.
Studies
‘Studies’ give an impression of the origin of the project, showcasing the origin of the stones and jewelry pieces in a more sculptural format.

Abra Candelabrum / extracting the archaïc
Stone and fire are connected in an ageless bond. A sparkle created by clashing two stones with each other has been igniting fire over centuries. At the same time stones are used to safely border campfires. The warmth of the stone and intimate flame, reflect here on our interior environment. The classical shapes of candle holders are brought to light by extracting it from the core of a stone. Set in a 21st-century interpretation, it connects a timeless design type with a primitive appearing but contemporary driven technology.

On composing with rock and flower
Flowers are intrinsically connected with composition and earth.
Influenced by varied vessels from past to present such as the dutch tulip vase and ikebana, in this series, rocks are turned into sceneries for holding flowers. The extracted core cylinders generate functional segments, composition and landscape.
With few interventions and elements, the designs parade with how theatrical and natural a vase can be.
